22nd November 2009
Windsurfing: The Ray-Southend
Wind Direction:
Wind Stength: 15 to 35 +
Surf / Sea State: flat and choppy
Air Temperature: 10
Sea Temperature: 13
Weather: Sun,cloud and rain
Max Speed: 32.21 (knots - unless stated otherwise)
Distance Covered: 21 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)

My fourth visit to the Ray and I can't find the wind strength or direction of my first trip and nearly 36 kts :( Arrived at 7 with Southend new boy Pete Cutts to find that the Portland crew including Pete Young were there already !!! So things looked good for a great days but sadly it never really lived up to the hype :( Went with the 6.4 and speedboard again as it was the only board I could get in my hire Ka although I think I would have been faster on the slalom board in the up and down winds !!! I wasted the first hour on the bottom course in really light winds having to walk back along the course twice !!!! But the wind filled in and if you could hold the wind long enough to get to the start of the top course you could have some pleasant runs but not really broad enough. The best winds were when a squall came through and you just hoped you were at the top of the course ready !!! One huge rain squall came near the end of the session making just standing at the edge difficult !!! The only really down part of the day was a badly injured kitesurfer found unconscious on the sandbank and two lifeboats arrived and he was lifted off by the rescue helicopter (Pete Cutts did a great job sitting with him for nearly an hour) so I hope the kiter is not too seriously hurt !!! So not a bad day to be out in the sunshine and showers even if the course was abit like Picadilli Circus as I have never seen so many sailers out !!! It will be interesting to see the times of the fast guys :) Then back to Felixstowe just in time to have a word with Dave White who is doing a report on my local spot :) again conditions not good there either :(
